Chewbacca Hopper

A hopper fly is a type of dry fly designed to imitate a grasshopper, a common terrestrial insect that often finds its way into rivers and streams, especially during late summer and early fall. Grasshoppers are a favorite food of many fish, particularly trout, because they’re big, juicy, and easy to catch when they fall into the water.

• Presentation: Cast the hopper fly near the banks, overhanging vegetation, or areas where grasshoppers might naturally fall into the water. Let it drift naturally with the current.
• Twitching: Occasionally twitch the fly to mimic the struggling movement of a grasshopper on the water’s surface. This can entice fish to strike, as it looks like an easy meal.
• Dry-Dropper Rig: Hoppers are often used as the dry fly in a dry-dropper rig, with a nymph or other subsurface fly tied below it. The buoyant hopper helps keep the nymph at the right depth and can attract fish to both flies.
